truly been able to bottom, never gave us any cause for concern. We arrived in Antigua with half a tank left, having never used the towed generator. The only moment was when the generator stopped due to overheating; it had eaten it’s impellor.
Although the miles were slipping by and we had trade winds well established this far North, we were missing the excitement of surfing down the Atlantic rollers. We would expect some quite invigorating sailing, surfing at maybe 12 to 15 knots, but the maximum we saw was a disappointing 10. This lack of speed seemed likely to produce a slow passage, but our northerly course had shortened the distance quite considerably. We duly entered English Harbor after only fifteen and a half days, having covered 2700 nm. We were the fastest boat in the fleet and beat a couple of 60+ footers into the bargain, not bad for a family boat which reefed down every night and never had a chute up!
It truly was an uneventful crossing. Boredom was the biggest threat to stability on the boat. Keeping bright youngsters occupied is a challenge for all! Radio watch every day with other Blue Water yachts was both reassuring and a welcome break from routine. Cooking became adventurous.
The boat is truly a credit to Conyplex. I don’t want to go over the top, but we had so few problems that others on the Rally commented. A new Oyater 66 had quite a few! It’s got to be in the build quality. Two particular comments on this boat. We have a custom interior and the revised layout worked very well for big people; lots of living space. The vertically battened main with in mast, hydraulic furling was brilliant, allowing us to reef downwind in anything under 25 knts. Without having to turn into wind, never jamming. The Doug Petersen hull form is a major step forward, giving a comfortable, fast ride and noticeably less rolling than the more traditional 48.
I was very torn between ordering an Oyster or a Contest. My experience with Wind Dancer has certainly confirmed me in my confidence. I wonder if they will give me a discount if I order a 60’ after this!
